Find & Replace - Matching Entire Cell Contents in Excel

By Laura Noble

In Excel when performing a Find (or Replace), the default is to search and Find cells that contain any part of the search criteria.

For example, in the spreadsheet displayed below, if a search for Chocolate was set up, the results would return to each cell since a "part" of Chocolate is contained in all the cells in the sample.

To skip the cells that contain any part of Chocolate during a search follow the steps below.

  1. From the Edit menu select Find (or Replace).

  2. Click the Options button in the lower right corner and this will expand the box.

  3. Click the Match Entire Cell Contents box and then click Find All or Find Next. Excel will find cells that contain Chocolate only not Chocolate plus other data.
